Stalker “Сталкер” (1979)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Oh my, where do I even begin? ‘Stalker’ is a Russian film by acclaimed auteur director, Andrei Tarkovsky. Released in 1979, it has slowly become a bit of a cult classic; one of those films where if you’ve seen it you judge people for not having seen or heard of it.

It follows the “Stalker” and two other men as they venture through treacherous military occupation to a place called “The Zone”, a place of mysticism and a prophesied room that grants any wish. This film is truly like no other. It in of itself is an enigma with so much story and myth behind it. It’s reported that the film was shot in full three different times and that this long arduous process which consisted of filming in unsuitable toxic conditions lead to the ultimate death of Takovsky. Anyway, back to the film! The film is billed a sci-fi drama, however I think it’s so much more. It is a deep and methodical meditation of the human spirit and condition. With it’s three distinct characters we each get a different facet of humanity. Through them, Takovsky examines want it means to be human to what it means to want.

If I’m being honest I think trying to explain what’s so great about the film is futile and doesn’t amount to much. This very review will never capture what ‘Stalker’ is and what it means to us.

“My conscience wants vegetarianism to win over the world. And my subconscious is yearning for a piece of juicy meat. But what do I want?”

Alice Rohrwacher shows off how exciting a writer-director she is in La Chimera with some subtle, yet insane camera moves and pans accompanying this excellent screenplay. Additionally, Josh O’Connor shows off how exciting an…

  • I’ll preface this by explaining that this film is probably my favourite film of all time. Nothing has ever affected me the way this film has. Terrence Malick is one of our greatest living directors, and his work continues to innovate and excel. I’m so glad that he returned to these scripted and structured films…
